Bangkok: The Heart of Central Thailand
Bangkok is a lively city filled with family-friendly activities, cultural landmarks, and plenty to see and do.
Kid-Friendly Activities in Bangkok
Chinatown: Wander through the busy streets of Chinatown, sample delicious street food, and visit the Golden Buddha at Wat Traimit.
Asiatique The Riverfront: An open-air mall along the Chao Phraya River, offering dining, shopping, and a Ferris wheel with views over the city.
ICONSIAM: A luxury mall with an indoor floating market, interactive exhibits, and stunning architecture, perfect for families.
Explore the Old City by Riverboat: Take a riverboat along the Chao Phraya River to visit Wat Arun and Wat Pho, two of Bangkok’s most famous temples.
Day Trip to Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya is an easy day trip from Bangkok and a must-see for families interested in history. Explore the ancient ruins at Ayutthaya Historical Park, including temples like Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Mahathat. A boat tour of Ayutthaya’s canals offers a unique view of the ruins. Within easy reach of Bangkok and yet what feels like a world away. This is worth a visit.
Day Trip to Kanchanaburi
Kanchanaburi is another great day trip from Bangkok. Visit the Bridge over the River Kwai, learn about WWII history at nearby museums, and enjoy the beautiful nature of Erawan National Park, where you can hike and swim in the stunning waterfalls.
Where to Stay in Bangkok
Central: Try Sala Daeng or Silom areas for great access to the city centre, lots of good restaurants and shopping, the BTS and walkable streets with sidewalks as well as Lumpini park.
Despite good access to five star hotels, amenities and shopping, avoid Sukhumvit as the traffic can make walking with kids especially dangerous. Also, in the low soi’s you are going to find things rather seedy. If you choose Sukhumvit, I recommend between Soi 33, Prom Phong, to 55, Thong Lor.
Riverside: Stay in a quieter area with beautiful views of the Chao Phraya River and easy access to the city’s main sights.
Recommended Hotel: [The Quarter Riverside Bangkok]
Beach Getaways: Koh Samet, Hua Hin, or Koh Chang
If you’re looking for a quick beach escape from Bangkok, Koh Samet or Hua Hin are excellent options, but if you have more time, Koh Chang is a fantastic alternative.
Koh Samet: A quieter, less crowded beach destination with crystal-clear waters, ideal for families. This is a great choice if you have limited time but still want a beach experience.
Recommended Hotel: [Sai Kaew Beach Resort]
Hua Hin: Known for its family-friendly beaches, calm waters, and laid-back atmosphere, within arms reach to amenities and Bangkok. This is a good alternative, but Koh Samet is generally recommended over Hua Hin if time allows.
Recommended Hotel: [Anantara Hua Hin Resort]
Koh Chang: For those with more time, Koh Chang offers pristine beaches, jungle trekking, and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for families seeking both adventure and relaxation. After your time in Sukhothai, fly with Bangkok Airways to Rayong and travel to Koh Chang.
Recommended Hotel: [The Emerald Cove Koh Chang]
Sukhothai: Ancient History and Cycling Tours
After your time in Bangkok, fly with Bangkok Airways from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Sukhothai, Thailand’s ancient capital. Sukhothai Historical Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the best way to explore it is by bike.
Cycle Tours in Sukhothai
Cycling through the park is one of the top family activities. There are child-sized bikes and trailers available, and guided tours offer fun, educational experiences for kids.

2-Week Central Thailand Family Itinerary
Days 1-4: Bangkok and Surrounding Areas
Explore central and historical Bangkok by riverboat from Saphan Taskin BTS stop. Go to the ferry pier under the station and avoid the tourist boat. A ride on the local commuter boat is only about 15 baht, but the tourist boat is about 1000 baht. If you are being called to by people in matching shirts to take the boat, its probably the tourist boat. Keep walking. Take the boat to Chinatown, Wat Arun and Wat Pho. There are separate boats from Saphan Taskin BTS to ICONSIAM or ASIATIQUE.
Take a day trip to Ayutthaya to explore the ruins and take a boat tour
Day trip to Kanchanaburi to visit the Bridge over the River Kwai and swim at Erawan Waterfalls

Book a family-friendly cycling tour with child bikes or trailers.
